ARTLETTER 1989-1990 Edition

Deborah Masters, a figurative sculptor, will be a visiting artist
during Spring of 1990. Critic Michael Brenson, writing in the New
York Times, April 1, 1988, stated: “Deborah Masters’
sculpture is involved with sexual and social stereotypes. It brings
to mind the earthy, idealized women by Maillol.” Her sculpture
group “Urban Figures” was shown at the Whitney Museum
of American Art in Spring, 1989. She discussed the work in an interview
in The New Yorker, January 16, 1989, saying that it was inspired
by witnessing the reaction of a group of women to the death of a
child. “This sculpture is about women who came together. It’s
first a piece about grief, but ultimately it’s about hope
– about people continuing. The women are supposed to be close
to the wall, so that when you enter you feel as if you were intruding
a bit.”
